I have long been an admirer of Marsden Hartley, the American modernist painter and poet who was born in Maine. I noticed a small tree in the background of one of his paintings. It was described as "a cross or a tree barely touching the clouds in a bright sky". That seemed a poignant description and showed that the 'tree' actually stood for another idea or emotion.
